Taking action to minimalise the effect of the ban

Introduce restrictions
Introduce smoking restrictions slowly to prepare your customers for the ban.

Plan ahead
Look at your outdoor space and think about how to best utilise it. Do you have space for a parasol or awning and what size should it be.

Find out about planning permission
Do you need planning permission for your outdoor area, is it your own property or property owned by the local council. Contact your local planning department and highways agency to ensure that you are not breaking the law with your proposals.

Consult your regulars
Get ideas from your customers on where best to site your smoking environment, where they will feel most comfortable.

Positioning
If possible create a space at the rear of your premises. It will give your customers more privacy and will enable you to keep your smoking environment secure.

Groundwork
Make sure that your proposed area is flat and accessible, that it will not become slippery when wet and is high heel friendly. Make your area attractive with clever use of colours and planting.

Budget
Be realistic about how much you want to spend, if you only have 10 regular customers who smoke, only create an area large enough for them and a few others.
